Organise contacts with segments and tags

Group your contacts with tags and saved segments so you can email and automate the right people.

2 min read · Updated 16 October 2026

Your contacts live in Audience › Contacts. Tags are labels you add to people. Segments are saved filters that keep themselves up to date. Both can be used to choose who gets a broadcast.

Tag contacts

  1. Open Audience › Contacts.
  2. Tick the people you want, then open Bulk actions.
  3. Choose Add tag…, type the tag and confirm. Use Remove tag to take one off.

You can also tag everyone in a CSV when you import, tag people who answer a form, or add a tag in an automation step.

Build a segment

  1. In Audience › Contacts, under Segments, choose New segment.
  2. Give it a Name, for example "Customers who joined this month".
  3. Choose whether contacts match all or any of the conditions.
  4. Add conditions with Add condition: pick a Field (such as tag, status, stage, source or a custom field), an Operator and a Value.
  5. Check Contacts who match, then choose Save segment.

The segment updates automatically as people join, change or leave.

Use them

  • In a broadcast's Audience & settings, choose A segment or A tag under Who gets it.
  • In automations, start one When someone is tagged, or branch with an if / else on a tag.

Tips

  • Add your own Fields (for example City or Membership tier) to filter on details that matter to you.
  • Keep tag names short and consistent so they're easy to pick later.
  • Deleting a segment never affects the contacts in it.

Troubleshooting

  • "You haven't saved a segment yet" in the email editor: build one in Contacts first.
  • Someone in a segment didn't get an email: only subscribed people with an email address receive broadcasts.
